About UK Low Bridge Restrictions

Bridge strikes cost the UK economy over £23 million per year in delays, damage, and emergency response. The majority happen to van and lorry drivers who didn't know the bridge was ahead — or trusted a navigation app that doesn't account for vehicle height.

HeightWise maintains a live database of every known height restriction in the UK, sourced from Network Rail records, local authority data, and OpenStreetMap community surveys.

Who needs this data

  • HGV and LGV drivers on unfamiliar routes
  • Van drivers with roof racks or high loads
  • Motorhome and campervan owners
  • Horse box and livestock trailer drivers
  • Double-decker coach operators
  • Removal van drivers in residential areas
  • Fleet managers planning delivery routes

Understanding clearance heights

Under 3.0m (9'10") — Extremely low. Impassable for most commercial vehicles, transit vans, and motorhomes.

3.0m–4.5m (9'10"–14'9") — Standard danger zone. Many vans, trucks, and coaches fall in this range.

4.5m+ (14'9"+) — Most standard vehicles can pass, but always verify against your specific load height.

Data sources

  • Network Rail bridge register (England, Scotland, Wales)
  • OpenStreetMap community-surveyed height tags
  • Local authority highways data
  • Updated via automated OSM Overpass API sweeps

All heights are in metres. Imperial equivalents shown on individual bridge pages. Data is provided for planning purposes — always check signage at the bridge.
